Beginning The Day With a Great Start

#ad #greatstarts

Last week I talked about my own personal struggles with eating breakfast and how I'm trying to create the habit for myself.

The rest of my family does very well when it comes to eating breakfast though, and they are all early risers with smiles on their faces every morning - except for little miss Emma.

Emma has never been much of a morning person. She has always been someone who would rather sleep in until at least 8:30 am and then lay in bed for 15-30 minutes without anyone bugging her so she could wake up at her own leisure. ( I think she might take after her mamma!)

I knew this year would be a challenge for her with starting Kindergarten and having to wake up earlier. It seems that no matter how early we get her to bed at night she just will not wake up and get going quickly in the morning. After many fights and attempts to get everything accomplished in the morning (which consists of putting on her clothes that are all laid out for her, brushing her teeth, hair, and eating breakfast) I've made some compromises.

We are so blessed that we live literally a soccer field away from the grade school, so every morning I get to walk Emma to school. In order to keep us from a tardy slip at 8:20 I've stocked the pantry with lots of quick breakfast foods (like breakfast bars and dried cereal in plastic bags) that we can quickly grab in the morning so Emma can eat on the go.

She seems to do much better at this then sitting at the kitchen table feeling rushed and overwhelmed. In fact it's turning into our little routine.

All kids are different and require a unique parenting approach. Creating a solution instead of a battle in the morning makes a Great Start for the entire day - and in return everyone has smiles on their faces and feels good.

Living Locally: Rose City Rollers

#rosecityrollers

Last Saturday we were invited to the Rose City Roller's season opening at the Memorial Coliseum. None of us had ever seen a Roller Derby live before and were all in for a fun evening! The whole event was just a great laid back time for everyone. The event was true Portland style filled with people in all shapes and sizes and outfits just being themselves.

#rosecityrollers

I checked online for the Roller Derby rules prior to coming, but I couldn't remember all of them. None the less it was still entertaining to watch all of the ladies set up and try to break free and knock each other over in the process. The kids got a kick out of that!

#rosecityrollers

There were two games back to back which made for a longer evening than I expected, but people definitely got their money's worth! The games are split into 30 minute halves with a break in between. The kids did great the first game, then we entertained them with what you would do in any sporting event: We bought pizza, kettle corn, and cotton candy! What's a family evening out without splurging on junk food? :)

The kids actually did really well because the whole atmosphere was so laid back, and hollering/cheering was encouraged throughout the evening!  It's so nice to go somewhere with the kids and not have to worry if they are making too much noise or being to rowdy.

Have you ever been to a roller derby before? What did you think?

Having three kids, its pretty safe to say that any date night out on the town is rare and of course cherished. I can't even remember if we've actually been out on Valentine's Day...ever. With all of our family living a few hours away, our dates normally need to be planned months in advance. Even though we can't go out often, I believe that it's still important to have dates, and that's when you have to get a little bit creative.

When you have a date night at home, it's important to make it a celebrated special occasion. This is of course easier if all of your kids are old enough sleeping throughout the night. :) I remember many times when the kids were younger and we were just settling in only to hear them crying again.

It gets easier, I promise.

So when we plan a date night in, what we normally do is get the kids something that I rarely buy them, like TV dinners to eat. They think it's pretty cool since its out of the norm - so we'll let them eat and all play a game of Yahtzee or something and then we get them off to bed before preparing our own meal together.

Here's a list that I always run through my head when I'm planning an evening for us together. Above all you just want to create an atmosphere that helps make a memorable evening together.

10 Ways to Create a Perfect Date Night at Home

1. Turn off the cell phones. I know it's hard, particularly for me. But I can't stand when there are two couples out on a date and they aren't even talking because they are both sitting there playing on their phones! To create a romantic date night, phones are a no-go.

2. Limit your topics. Since it's a date night, make a pact not to mention the kids, what your boss did today, or how the dog ticked you off. Think back to when you first met. What did you talk about then? I bet it was more along the lines of dreams and wishes and things you had done. Not all of the everyday things. It's wonderful to talk about those things together, and you should, but on date nights change up the topics a little. If you need help look around for conversations starter games, those can be pretty fun to get to know each other even better.

3.What's the occasion? Is it one of your birthdays? Valentine's day? Maybe it's just been way too long since you've done anything together besides talk about work and the kids. Figure out why you want to create a date night at home and that will help you plan the evening.

4. Set the table. Are you cooking together, or ordering takeout? Maybe you want to cook a nice meal together leisurely, just because you can. Plated.com is a nice way to cook your own meal without having to shop for ingredients. Or perhaps you are just tired of cooking and want a nice meal prepared by someone else. In either case, break out the nice china and set the table and dim the lights. Add some flowers and candles.

5. Find some music. Okay, it might sound cheesy, but this really helps. Think about it, when you are out on a date how many times is there something in the background? Some nice jazz or classic Sinatra playing quietly in the living room is always a plus. Whatever kind of music you choose, make sure its easy listening. You don't want it to take away from the mood, only to add to the ambiance you are creating.

6.What are you going to wear? As tempting as it is for me to throw my sweats on as soon as I get home, if I was going out on a date I wouldn't wear them, so change into a nice outfit when your partner comes home, or after the kids are in bed.

7.Create a signature cocktail. Or mocktail if you don't drink. Or even a bottle of special wine. What's your favorite drink to order when you go out for the night? Why not make it at home for your date too? Here's four classy cocktails to help give you ideas.

8.What's after dinner? Will you be watching a movie? Taking a stroll down memory lane? Stargazing on the patio? Or perhaps playing a little game of Monopoly for old time's sake? Plan the activities after the meal just like you would if you were going out.

9.Create the ambiance in the bedroom as well. So the table looked nice, the dinner was fantastic, and the date is wrapping up... the last thing you want is to move the date into the bedroom only to kill the mood with a cluttered master room, or an unmade bed. Make sure the room's atmosphere matches the rest of the evening.

10. Give your partner a little gift. A fun idea is to make a gift basket themed to what you are doing after your dinner "date" is done. I created a romantic gift basket that didn't cost me very much at all and I got everything I needed while I was birthday shopping for Emma last week at Walmart. (Two gifts in one shopping trip!) Inside I put a bottle of sparkling wine, bath salts, lotion, oil, chocolates, candles, and some K-Y Date Night Yours + Mine couples lubricants. I took a box that I had laying around, wrapped it and added glitter paper hearts and a bow and viola! Perfect for Valentine's Day!

It's really cool because right now when you purchase the K-Y Date Night couples lubricant you also receive gift codes from Plated.com and Vudu.com for $40 worth of dinner and a movie at home. What a great deal for your evening in!

I hope I inspired you to give dating at home a try!

Making Breakfast My Habit

#ad #greatstarts

I've never been a person that was much into New Year's Resolutions because it seems that most people create these 'I'm going to do this...' or 'I'll never do THAT again...' only to forget about them a week later.

The problem is that without any goals and timelines those resolutions are just dreams. So every year I create a list of New Year's Goals, and I make sure I have a means of measuring my progress and success.

When I first heard about Kellogg's Great Start campaign, I knew what one of my goals had to be: eating breakfast. I'm such a stickler about making sure my kids eat something before heading off to school, and my husband never skips breakfast - ever, but I've struggled with this morning meal my whole life.

#ad #greatstarts

It's not that I have anything personal against eating in the AM - in fact as a nurse I know just how important it is to start the day off right by fueling your body with what it needs. Without breakfast your body's metabolism slows down and I don't know about you, but I end up feeling light headed by lunch time, and I still feel like I'm dragging all afternoon. It's like my body can't catch up, and then I usually end up eating to much right before bed.

Studies have shown that it takes a minimum 21 days to create a habit. That means consciously doing an activity every single day until it just becomes part of your everyday routine and you don't have to think about it anymore.

So I knew that in order to create this breakfast habit of mine I had to do two things, 1.) Make a reminder for myself and 2.) a short term goal. Luckily for me (and you!) there's an easy printable from the Great Start campaign that I could stick on my fridge to remind myself every morning as well as track my progress.

I'm nearing week two of my habit-forming process now, and while I wouldn't call eating breakfast a routine just yet, I would say I'm getting used to the idea. I usually get up, get the kids off to school, then eat a breakfast bar or a bowl of cereal like Kellogg's Raisin Bran with Omega-3 From Flax seed.

If you are ready to create a new habit, join me! There is no better time like right now!

Here are 3 simple tips I've learned that you should remember before you begin:

  • Start one new habit at a time: You don't want to set yourself up for failure by trying to change too many things at once. Chances are it would become overwhelming and you'll be more likely to give up before any new habits are formed.
  • Use positive self-reinforcement: Throw out words like "I can't", or "I just don't think I'll make it." Yes you can! The human mind is so powerful, I believe you can do anything if you want it bad enough. Whenever a negative thought pops into your head just remind yourself how amazing you are and what you can do. Better yet write a positive statement in each day of your printed 21 day calendar every night before bed.
  • Mark it down: Utilize the calendar. Place it somewhere you look every morning to remind yourself on what you are working on, and how far you are progressing.
Just keep trying and you'll create a good habit sooner than you know it!
